Eat Well Ferguson! is a project of Live Well Ferguson with the goal of making it easier to select healthy choices when you dine out. Live Well Ferguson is partnering with local restaurants to increase your options for healthy dining choices. Equipped with the right information, anyone can navigate a restaurant menu with confidence – whether you already live a healthy lifestyle or you are looking to begin incorporating healthy habits into your daily choices.
Restaurants are becoming a bigger part of the American diet. With obesity on the rise, it is important to make informed choices when eating out. Restaurants can be a partner in helping you make food choices for your overall health. Participating Eat Well Ferguson restaurants care about your health and are committed to providing healthy options. By using healthier ingredients and different cooking methods, they are able to offer you healthier food choices on their menus.
Entrées qualify as “Eat Well” meal choices when they include at least three of the following:
- A serving of fruit or vegetable;
- A whole grain;
- A lean protein source; and
- A healthy fat source such as olive oil or other unsaturated plant oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, or fish (such as salmon) rich in omega-3 fatty acids
Eat Well menu items will be identified with a small Eat Well Ferguson logo as shown below:
How do I find a participating Eat Well Ferguson restaurant?
Participating restaurants will have an Eat Well Ferguson! window cling in their front window. Brochures outlining the Eat Well Ferguson program will also be on display in the restaurants. Check the Ferguson Times for updates as new restaurants come on board.
Participating Eat Well Ferguson restaurants can be certified at three different levels:
- BASIC – Offer at least one Eat Well choice
- SILVER – Offer a number of choices and include healthy side options
- GOLD – Offer a number of healthy options, use locally grown produce, and offer reasonable portion sizes

Heart-Healthy Tips for Dining Out
Use these basic tips to guide your menu choices. Remember your long-term health depends on the daily choices you make, so don’t be afraid to ask if you can customize:
- Ask for sauces and dressings on the side
- Request extra vegetables
- Opt for steamed vegetables over sautéed or fried choices
- Choose grilled or broiled meat and fish over fried options
- Look for a meal combination with fiber and protein to help fill you up. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains are great foods for increasing your fiber intake
- For restaurants with large portion sizes, ask for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal.This way you control your portion size
- Ask for half of the cheese normally served
