WELL FERGUSON
September 2009
September
is here and like it or not those lazy hazy days of summer
are coming to an end. A new season gives everyone a chance
to take a fresh look at ourselves.
Giving
positive feedback to one person each day and thinking
of a positive adjective for ourselves is a "heart" healthy
tidbit. Adults can extend this to children and encourage
them to do the same.
With
school starting kid's routines should fall into more of
a schedule. Beginning and ending each week day at approximately
the same time helps get sleep/wake cycles set for important
healthy rest. Beginning the day with a healthy breakfast
gives bodies energy to work a full day and is needed for
healthy brain growth.
Adding
calorie burning activity to a day after spending time
in a classroom or office can be as simple as: walking
and biking on errands or to school, raking leaves, skipping
and jump roping in the park and performing household chores.
In
some areas physical education classes have been cut so
it may be important to be sure kids are getting some organized
sports or exercise.
A
healthy lunch refuels the body for the second half of
the day. A sandwich with whole grain breads, and lean
deli meats like turkey, and chicken with low fat condiments,
or a salad, along with a piece of fruit or raw veggies
for that crunch crave are good healthy choices.
After
school or on the way home from work a snack is often needed
before dinner. Watch that this snack doesn't sabotage
the positive steps taken all day long, so a hand full
of almonds, and or a lowfat oatmeal raisin cookie with
a cool glass of water or 100% fruit juice are good choices.
